Divorce for 'Lov Gov' Eliot Spitzer

When the news broke that former New York governor Eliot Spitzer was resigning from office because of his penchant for prostitutes, the media frenzy was on. While it might have subsided in the past few years, the news that Spitzer and his wife are divorcing will likely fuel that media fire again.

According to reports, this high asset divorce is due to several reasons. After a photo was released by The Post of the 54-year-old Spitzer and a 31-year-old, as well as a story that detailed their living arrangement, the divorce was announced the next day. The woman worked on Bill de Blasio's mayoral campaign, who said in recent statements that he was unaware of the woman's affair with Spitzer.

According to statements from the former power couple, the 26-year marriage has been over for quite some time. There are negotiations into property division, as Spitzer is currently trying to avoid selling property that is owned by his father. There are several high-value properties that Spitzer managers for his ill father, including one on Fifth Ave., and Central Park South. In total, his father's properties are said to be worth $1 billion.

Spitzer, however, had a significant adjusted gross income for last year - $4.2 million. There are also three daughters from the marriage, ages 24, 21 and 19. Child custody is not an issue in this divorce.

Spitzer's morally-questionable antics were announced in 2008 and his soon-to-be ex-wife was right by his side when he announced his resignation. It's believed that this story was the basis for the critically acclaimed television show, "The Good Wife."

Divorce is never easy, but when there is infidelity, there are many emotions and raw feelings present. Keeping those emotions out of the divorce negotiations is important. A family law attorney can help you explore your options during a divorce when it comes to property division, child custody and support and alimony.
