Chance of divorce may increase when you make secret purchases

Imagine you have a few items you want to buy; maybe they aren't essential items, but you have been eyeing them for a long time. You have discussed this with your spouse, and he or she thinks it is best to wait a little while before buying these items.

But in a compulsive moment, you decide to purchase the items behind your spouse's back. You whip out the credit card and get your things. From here, the story can go two ways: either your spouse finds out within hours of the purchase that you have gone against his or her wishes, or it could take a while for your spouse to find out.

In either scenario, though, your spouse will eventually learn that you have made a secret credit card purchase behind their back. And that, according to a new study, could lead to some serious marital strife.

A price comparison website performed a study of about 1,000 men and women, asking questions about purchasing items behind their spouse's back. The results were interesting: about 10 percent of respondents said that a secret credit card purchase played some sort of role in their ultimate divorce.

So what does this say, besides the obvious (i.e. don't lie to your spouse)? Communication is such a critical factor, both in divorce and in a relationship. When you fail to communicate with your spouse, it creates tension and confusion, which can snowball. In a marriage, this could lead to divorce. In a divorce, this could lead to a long, painful and costly split that could have been avoided.
