Common-law divorce plagues Iggy Azalea

Imagine getting notified that you are being sued for divorce. That might be a shock for someone who really isn't expecting it. Now, imagine that you get that notification while you aren't divorced. You can imagine how much of a shock that would be. For rapper Iggy Azalea, that is exactly what happened.

Azalea isn't married, but she was served with divorce papers from her ex-boyfriend. The man, Hefe Wine, is suing Azalea for divorce based on a common-law marriage. Under Texas law, there are three points that make a common law marriage valid, according to FindLaw. The couple has to live together as a husband and wife, they have to tell others they are married, and they have to agree to be married. If these conditions are met, a formal divorce is necessary to end the common-law relationship.

In Azalea's case, the man alleges that those conditions were met. Some assert that this divorce filing is Wine's way to get money from the famed female rapper. She says that she has a good group of witnesses to back her side of the story. She is waiting for a judge to find that his claim should be disproven.

She also says that she will be seeking a restraining order against the man. She says she has avoided Texas because of him and that when she is forced to go into the state, she has a police escort and armed bodyguards. She also alluded to another woman who has a child with the man, and who has made claims of abuse.

Common-law divorce in Texas is a very complex matter. Because of this, it is vital for anyone who needs to end a common-law marriage to understand how the laws in Texas might affect them.
