How do you plan for the chaos of summer?

During the school year, things are pretty routine for divorced parents in Texas simply because things are routine for the children. Your custody schedule stays the same and your obligations stay the same. When summer hits, though, the kids are free from school and chaos can reign. To prepare for this and keep it from being difficult, you should plan in advance.

First of all, you and your spouse need to have a plan for custody and visitation. You may change things around a bit since the children don't need to go to school. Rather than seeing the kids on the weekend while they live with your spouse, for instance, it may be easier to trade them back and forth every week.

You also want to plan out any vacations well in advance. You can't take spur-of-the-moment trips, no matter how fun it sounds, if that cuts into your spouse's custody time. You must respect his or her rights and get everything on the calendar. Remember, your spouse probably has extended trips to take as well, so you both can figure out a way to plan around each other and keep things fair.

If you can't agree, remember that it is possible to get a mediator or a judge to do it for you. This person's goal will be to figure out what is in the best interests of your children and what is fair to both sides. While you may not get everything you want, this is a way to keep your spouse from preventing you from having any time with your children this summer. Make sure you know about all of your legal options and your rights as a parent.
