Study: There could be a 'divorce season'

A recent research study done by a doctoral candidate and a sociology professor at the University of Washington shows that there are two months in which the number of divorce filings peak in Washington state.

The researchers found "the first quantitative evidence of a seasonal, biannual pattern to divorce filings." The data on divorce filings in the state show that the highest number of divorce filings happen in March and August.

The researchers examined data from 2001 to 2015 and discovered the peaks in divorce filings in every year. According to their postulations, they believe the summer and winter holidays and vacations actually lead to the increased number of filings. One of the researchers of the study noted, "People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past."

After expectations for a better relationship fall short, many people decide to end their marriages. This analysis and resulting theory seems to pan out, as the researchers considered divorce filing data from four other states and discovered that the pattern was present there as well.

Divorce is a very emotional time, and those emotions can end up having a drastic effect on decisions. This is not a good idea, however, as emotions can stall decision making for what is in your best interests or the best interests of your child(ren). An experienced divorce attorney in Texas can help you stay on the right path when it comes to child custody, child support, alimony, property division and more. By pushing your emotions away long enough to make sound decisions about your future, you will have a better foundation as you move forward.
