Car registration and back child support in Texas

Most parents understand the importance of child support and pay it on schedule. Some parents think that they can fly under the radar and get away without paying. This used to be something that was possible to an extent in Texas; however, that isn't the case any longer.

Texas law now allows for the state to deny renewal of car registration for people who owe back child support. This doesn't mean that all arrears have to be paid before the renewal. Instead, the person has to start making payments on the arrears in order to get one's registration.

There are some exceptions to the new rule. For example, if a vehicle is registered to two parties, the renewal wouldn't be denied if one party owes back child support. This does leave room for unscrupulous people to take advantage of the loophole. Some people might add another party to their registration for this purpose. In some cases, people might transfer the title over to a family member.

Some argue that this program is targeting poor parents who can't pay child support. They argue that failing to renew registration might take away the parent's transportation for finding work so they can financially support their children. While these are important points, it is important for children to be able to count on their parents to pay for the necessities.

Whether you are the paying parent or the receiving parent, you have rights when it comes to child support. Knowing the options to requesting modifications or for trying to get back child support can help you to ensure your rights are protected.
