Issues parents should consider during divorce

Getting divorced when you don't have kids often means focusing on only what is best for you. This may sound selfish, but you need to make sure your rights are respected, and it's just you and your spouse. When you're a parent, though, a whole host of other issues come into play. These include:

1. Physical custody.

Where is your child going to live? Are you going to share this right, or will your child live with one of you most of the time, just getting visits from the other parent?

2. Legal custody.

Someone has to make choices for your child, such as where to go to school, where to go to church, and what type of health care to get. Will only one of you make these decisions, or will you have to work together?

3. Parenting plans.

How are you going to raise the child? If you were married, you'd work on rules and parenting styles together. The parenting plan can help you do it after divorce.

4. Daycare.

Since you're splitting up, you may both have to work. You'll each have your own living expenses. If one of you planned to stay home with the kids before, you now need to look into daycare options.

5. Child support.

When one of you spends most of the time raising the kids and the other earns more money, child support payments may need to change hands to even things out.

These are just five issues of many that could potentially come up, but they show you just how different divorce can be with kids. Be sure you know all of your rights and obligations.
