Understand why children need consistency during divorces

The dynamics of your family change a lot when you get divorced. This can be very difficult for all children, especially young children. Trying to keep a normal routine might help your child to adjust to the new way of life and thrive.

Even children who aren't able to tell time yet can benefit from the routines that they have come to know. They will know that when they wake up, it is time to eat breakfast. They may be able discern when it is time for lunch or nap. Activities like bath time might become ingrained in the child's mind.

It isn't always possible to keep the exact same schedule when you are going through a divorce. Ideally, you will be able to keep your child on a schedule that is very similar to the one he or she is accustomed to. Even if you can only keep bedtime and wake up time consistent, this will help your child greatly.

Your children might reap benefits that are even greater if you and your ex can work together to keep the basics of the schedule the same from one house to another. As your children get older, this won't be necessary as the child will be better able to adjust to the differences in the homes.

Make sure that you plan for periods of adjustment as your child goes back and forth between homes. Having a little understanding for your child might help him or her learn that adjusting does take work but that it is possible to make it happen.
