Plan to overcome feeling down before the holidays

Many people look forward to the festivities that occur during the Christmas holiday season. For people who have been divorced in the past year, having their first Christmas in a while as a single person might feel a little sadder than the holidays of the past.

It is important that you take a good look at what you are going through to decide how you can overcome these periods of feeling down. Figuring out a plan now can help you to look forward to the holiday seasons to come with gleeful anticipation.

One thing that you can do is to evaluate the traditions you have gotten accustomed to. If there are any that you didn't enjoy and only did because your ex enjoyed them, you might want to cut those out. You might also want to start new holiday traditions.

Having a holiday party at your home is one of the ways you can build a new tradition. Showing off your new home if you didn't keep the marital home or inviting people to see what you've done with the marital home might be a good way to kick off the season.

You also need to think about your children. Write out the holiday custody schedule to determine what fun activities you can take them to enjoy. This is also a good time to find out what types of traditions they might enjoy starting with you.

As you are going through the holiday season, remember that it is okay to enjoy some things alone. You don't always need someone to validate your choices or to share experiences with you.
